Nobody Told Me This About Agricultural Drone Regulations
Recently, while speaking with people interested in entering the agricultural drone spraying industry, we keep hearing a very similar story.
It often starts like this:
Learn about agricultural drones →
Prepare for the Advanced Pilot Certificate →
Plan to purchase a drone such as the DJI Agras T100 or T50.
But once they reach this stage, many people realize things are not as simple as they expected.
The First Surprise: Passing the Advanced Exam Is Not the Final Step
Many people assume that once they pass the Advanced Pilot Certificate exam, they are ready to start flying.
However, in Canada, there is one more important step required before you can legally conduct advanced operations:
Flight Review
This review must be completed with a Transport Canada-recognized reviewer.
Only after successfully completing the Flight Review does your Advanced certificate actually become operational.
What many new pilots discover after passing the exam is this:
“Where can I actually take the Flight Review?”
In some regions, there are very few organizations that offer this service, which often leaves people stuck at this stage.
The Second Surprise: Some Agricultural Drones Don’t Even Appear in the Registration System
Another common question comes up when people try to register their drone.
Many operators are surprised to discover that some large agricultural drones don’t show up in the Transport Canada system the same way smaller drones do.
This is because many large or specialized RPAS models rely on a regulatory mechanism called a SAD (Special Authorization Declaration).
A SAD is submitted by the manufacturer to Transport Canada, declaring that a specific aircraft model can conduct certain operations under defined conditions.
For many agricultural drones, this declaration plays an important role in enabling Advanced Operations.
Example: DJI Agras T100
Take the DJI Agras T100, which many operators are currently interested in.
Operationally, this aircraft typically falls within Advanced Operations, meaning the pilot generally needs:
✔ Advanced Pilot Certificate
✔ Flight Review
But once people reach this stage, another question usually comes up:
“Do I also need an SFOC?”
The answer depends on several factors, including:
- Operating environment
- Risk category
- Type of operation
- Mission profile
This is often when operators realize that agricultural drone compliance involves more than just a pilot certificate.
Another Question We Hear Often
Many new operators also ask:
“Why did I pass my Advanced exam but still can’t start spraying?”
The answer usually lies in the compliance pathway.
Agricultural drone operations often involve several steps:
1️⃣ Advanced Pilot Certificate
2️⃣ Flight Review
3️⃣ Aircraft registration
4️⃣ Operational compliance
If these steps are misunderstood or taken in the wrong order, it can lead to significant delays.
Why We Provide End-to-End Training and Support
Over the past few years, we’ve worked with many people entering the agricultural drone industry, including:
- Farmers
- Custom applicators
- Agricultural retailers
- Service providers
Many are willing to comply with regulations — they simply don’t know where to start.
That’s why we focus on providing complete support for agricultural drone operators, including:
• Advanced Pilot Certificate training
• Flight Review
• DJI Agras T100 / T50 delivery training
• Operational training for real agricultural missions
• Technical support and after-sales service
In short, our goal is to help operators move from “interested in the industry” to “operating confidently in the field.”
If you are considering entering the agricultural drone spraying industry, understanding the compliance pathway before purchasing equipment can save a significant amount of time.
