Across the expansive fields between Chatham and London, Ontario, one farmer’s journey reflects the quiet strength and forward thinking that define modern Canadian agriculture. Andrew McCallum, a third-generation farmer with a background in engineering and over 30 years of experience growing corn, soybeans, and wheat, once viewed drone technology with a healthy dose of skepticism.
That changed in the spring of 2023, when he took a leap of faith and purchased the DJI Agras T40 — his first step into the world of agricultural drones. He immediately enrolled in official DJI Academy training, laying a solid foundation in drone safety and operations. Andrew understood that, like any new tool, success wouldn’t come overnight — and that proper training was not just helpful, but essential.
“Everyone wants to feel confident before getting behind a new piece of equipment,” he says. “That’s where the training really makes the difference — it turns uncertainty into capability.”
Translating classroom lessons into real-world performance brought early challenges. Even for someone with his background, field operations like takeoff, spraying, and return-to-home weren’t second nature at first. Like many first-time users, Andrew needed time to adapt. But what stood out most was his commitment to mastering the system — asking questions, relearning steps, and practicing until every process became second nature.
Over the 2023 growing season, Andrew fully transitioned into a skilled and independent operator of the T40. He was impressed by the drone’s ease of use — especially the intuitive touchscreen, autonomous flight paths, and real-time adaptability. He found the system’s ability to adjust for weather, field topography, and crop condition to be a game changer.
And the results spoke volumes: improved yields through foliar feeding and disease protection, reduced soil compaction from tramlines, and the ability to plant cover crops mid-season — a major boost to soil health.
By 2025, Andrew wasn’t just flying for himself. Now an authorized DJI dealer, he’s guiding other farmers through the learning curve, helping them avoid the common missteps he once made himself.
“I fell a few times,” he admits with a smile, “so others won’t have to.”
His experience has become a living resource in the local farming community — proof that technology, when combined with persistence and proper support, can bring real results. Andrew’s journey from cautious beginner to confident expert is not just a personal success, but a roadmap for others.
He represents a new generation of Canadian farmers: grounded in tradition, but eager to innovate — not afraid to ask questions, and proud to share what they’ve learned.
