A Practical Starting Point for Organizations Building an Agricultural Drone Program
One thing that has surprised us over the years is how often organizations assume that buying the drone will be the difficult part.
In reality, it usually isn’t.
The aircraft arrives, the team is excited, a few demonstrations take place, and everyone starts imagining where the technology could fit into the business. For a while, everything feels straightforward.
The real challenges tend to appear several months later.
Someone asks a technical question that nobody is completely sure how to answer. A customer encounters a situation that wasn’t covered during the original training. An employee who spent the most time with the drone moves into a different role. A battery issue appears, a parameter setting doesn’t behave as expected, or a field presents conditions nobody has encountered before.
None of these situations are unusual.
In fact, after supporting agricultural drone operators across Canada for several years, we’ve come to realize that they are almost inevitable.
The organizations that continue to grow are rarely the ones with the most equipment. More often, they are the ones that have built a small group of people who continue learning, continue asking questions and continue sharing knowledge as the program develops.
That observation is what shaped the Strategic Partner Starter Package.
Rather than trying to train an entire organization at once, we generally recommend starting with a small core team. In many successful programs, that team begins with one Technical Lead and one Sales or Agronomy Lead.
The Technical Lead gradually becomes the person everyone turns to when operational questions arise. This individual develops familiarity with the equipment, understands common challenges and helps maintain consistency as the program grows.
The Sales or Agronomy Lead serves a different but equally important role. Their focus is helping customers understand where drone technology fits into modern agricultural operations and how it can support agronomic objectives, improve flexibility and create value in situations where traditional approaches may be limited.
Once those two people are in place, the next challenge is making sure they do not have to learn everything the hard way.
Over the years, we have spoken with operators who spent thousands of dollars repairing aircraft after power line strikes. We’ve heard from businesses that lost valuable time because nobody was available to answer technical questions when problems appeared. We have also seen organizations purchase excellent equipment, only to discover that the greatest obstacle was not flying the drone but building the knowledge and support structure around it.
Most of those lessons were expensive.
Many of them were preventable.
The purpose of the Starter Package is to shorten that learning curve.
Included in the program is access to the Wonderfull Academy Certification Pathway, the Application Parameter Guide, ongoing technical support and the Wonderfull Knowledge Network—a growing collection of lessons learned through years of supporting agricultural drone operators across Canada and North America.
The Knowledge Network is particularly important because experience is often the most difficult thing to acquire. Technical specifications can be found online. Product information is readily available. What is harder to find are the practical lessons that come from real-world operations, unexpected situations and years of accumulated field experience.
One operator recently told us that the most expensive lesson he learned was not about flying at all—it was choosing the wrong source of support. Another shared that a simple boundary-planning mistake led to a repair bill that could have paid for a significant amount of training.
Stories like these are remarkably common.
They also reinforce the same point.
Success in agricultural drone operations is rarely determined by the aircraft alone.
It is usually determined by the people, the knowledge and the support systems surrounding it.
For organizations beginning their drone journey, the Strategic Partner Starter Package includes:
• Development pathway for one Technical Lead
• Development pathway for one Sales or Agronomy Lead
• Wonderfull Academy Certification
• Application Parameter Guide
• Access to the Wonderfull Knowledge Network
• Ongoing Technical Support
• Program Development Consultation
For most organizations, this provides a practical and sustainable foundation from which a larger drone program can grow.
As the program evolves, additional personnel, training and support resources can be added based on the organization’s needs and objectives.
