Do You Really Need a Dedicated Trailer for Your Agricultural Drone?

Start With What You Have — Then Decide What You Actually Need

As agricultural drones become more common, the questions we hear from operators are changing.

In the early days, one of the most common questions was:

“Can a drone really spray crops?”

Later, the conversation shifted to how many acres a drone could cover in a day and how much water it should use.

Today, more of the discussion is moving beyond the drone itself. One topic we hear more and more is the trailer.

Some agricultural drone trailers have become highly specialized, integrating large water tanks, mixing systems, generators, battery charging areas, tool and parts storage, drone landing platforms, and even elevated work areas for operators.

There are clear advantages to this type of setup. For commercial operators moving from one farm to another, having water, power, chemicals, drones, and tools organized in one mobile system can reduce loading and unloading time and make it easier to get to work when arriving at a new site.

But our advice over the years has remained fairly simple:

    Start with what you have.

If your farm already has a pickup, flatbed trailer, water tank, pump, generator, or mixing tank, you don’t necessarily need to replace your entire ground support system just because you’ve added an agricultural drone.

Start operating first. Then let real-world experience tell you what you actually need.

Start With Acres Before Deciding on Tank Size

When people design a drone trailer, the water tank is often one of the most noticeable components. After seeing someone else with a 500-, 800-, or even larger tank, it’s easy to assume that carrying more water automatically means greater operating capacity.

A better place to start is with your actual water requirement.

If your agricultural drone is applying at 2 GPA (gallons per acre), a 300-gallon tank can theoretically support approximately 150 acres.

At 3 GPA, the same tank supports approximately 100 acres.

    In other words:

    300 gallons ≈ 100–150 acres at 2–3 GPA.

That simple calculation quickly shows why different operations may need very different setups.

If you are primarily spraying your own farm and have a convenient, reliable water source nearby, you may not need to carry an entire day’s supply of water everywhere you go. An existing 200- or 300-gallon tank may already be very practical.

For a commercial applicator, however, the situation can be completely different. You may work at one farm in the morning and travel dozens of kilometres to another farm in the afternoon, without knowing whether an appropriate water source will be available at each location.

In that situation, greater water capacity and a complete mobile trailer system may offer significant advantages.

The same drone can require a very different ground support system depending on how it is being used.

    Bigger Isn’t Automatically Better

Trailer designs have a natural tendency to grow.

Once you’re building one, it can be tempting to solve every possible need at the same time: a larger water tank, more tools, more storage, a generator, charging equipment, a mixing station, and perhaps a dedicated drone platform.

Each feature may have value, but together they also increase the size and weight of the trailer.

That doesn’t mean a large trailer is a bad idea. For a commercial crew traveling long distances and serving multiple customers every day, that investment may make perfect sense.

For a farmer working primarily on their own property, however, there are other practical considerations: field entrances, turning space, the tow vehicle, road access, and where the trailer will be parked and operated.

Instead of asking how much equipment can fit on the trailer, we prefer to ask:

What problem is this trailer supposed to solve?

If reliable water isn’t available near the field, a larger tank solves a water-supply problem.

If you’re moving between farms every day, a trailer solves an organization and transportation problem.

If your normal takeoff area is dusty or unsuitable, a dedicated platform may solve a staging problem.

Identify the problem first. Then choose the equipment.

When Designing a Trailer, Think About How the Operator Moves

This is one part of agricultural drone trailer design that deserves more attention.

When a trailer is parked at a trade show, it’s natural to focus on where the drone sits, how large the tank is, and how neatly everything is organized.

    Actual field operations are different.

The drone returns. The operator checks the aircraft, refills it, handles the battery, and prepares for the next flight. During a long day, this process may be repeated many times.

    So in addition to asking:

    “Where does the drone go?”

    we should also ask:

    “Where does the operator go?”

How many times does someone climb up and down during the day? Where are the batteries stored? How far are they carried? Where are the hoses routed? Where does mixing take place? Does the operator need to carry equipment up and down a platform?

These issues may seem minor at the beginning of the morning. After several hours of working in the sun, however, fatigue, reduced concentration, wet or muddy footwear, and repeated climbing can become important safety considerations.

    A Real Industry Accident

In 2026, a young U.S. agricultural drone operator, Hayden Crum, publicly shared his experience following a serious accident.

According to his own public account, he fell from a drone trailer while performing drone spraying work, suffering a fractured L2 vertebra and a skull fracture. He subsequently underwent spinal surgery and entered an extended rehabilitation process.

This case does not establish that the trailer itself caused the accident. We do not know from his account the trailer’s exact design, the height of the working area, or all of the circumstances that led to the fall.

It does, however, highlight an important consideration for the industry:

Trailer design isn’t only about equipment. It is also about the operator’s working environment.

That is why we have long preferred a simple principle:

If a routine task can safely be done from the ground, keep it on the ground whenever practical.

Elevated platforms can certainly serve a purpose. In tall crops or certain terrain conditions, additional height may improve the operator’s view.

But needing elevation for a specific purpose is different from moving every routine task to an elevated work area.

A good trailer should not only organize equipment well. It should also reduce unnecessary climbing, carrying, and repetitive movement wherever practical.

Don’t Overlook the Takeoff and Landing Area

    Agricultural drones generate significant downwash.

Repeated takeoffs and landings from loose soil, gravel, or dusty surfaces can throw dirt and debris into the air, creating an unpleasant working environment and increasing cleaning and maintenance requirements.

A clean, stable takeoff and landing area can therefore be very useful. This is one reason some purpose-built drone trailers incorporate a dedicated landing deck.

But a trailer isn’t the only solution.

An existing flatbed, a simple ground-level platform, or a carefully selected staging area may accomplish the same goal.

    Again, the principle is simple:

Identify the problem first, then decide how you want to solve it.
