Another growing season is coming to an end, and we are already beginning to prepare for 2027.
Over the past several years, agricultural drones have become a more common sight on Canadian farms. They are being used for spraying, spreading, cover crop seeding, crop scouting and more. As the technology improves, the number of jobs these machines can handle continues to grow.
But after talking with farmers, we have realized that the real question for many of them isn’t:
“Which drone should I buy?”
It is something much more practical:
“Do I actually need a drone on my farm? And if I do, what is the best way to use one?”
That is the question we want to start with as we prepare for the 2027 season.
You May Not Need to Own a Drone
Wonderfull sells agricultural drones and provides training and technical support, but we don’t believe every farm needs to own one.
For some farms, ownership makes a lot of sense. If you have enough acres, multiple applications throughout the season, and tight application windows, having your own drone available when you need it can provide a great deal of flexibility.
For other farms, hiring a trained operator may make more sense.
Maybe your ground sprayer handles most of your work, but you need another option when the field is too wet to enter. Maybe you want to spread cover crop seed before harvest. Or perhaps you have certain fields, orchards or difficult areas where conventional equipment isn’t practical.
In those situations, you may not need to own a drone.
You may simply need the job done at the right time and done properly.
Spraying, Spreading, Scouting — Or Maybe You’re Not Sure Yet
As we prepare for 2027, we don’t want to start by deciding how many drones should be available or how many operators should be trained.
We want to hear from farmers first.
Do you expect to need drone spraying next year?
Are you considering spreading cover crops or seed?
Would crop scouting or mapping be useful?
Are you thinking about purchasing your own agricultural drone?
Or have you seen agricultural drones working and wondered whether they could have a place on your farm, but you’re not quite sure where to start?
“I’m not sure yet” is a perfectly good answer.
You don’t need to understand drone models, application parameters or flight systems before talking to us. Those are things we can help with later.
First, we want to understand your farm: where you are located, how many acres you farm, what you grow, how you currently handle applications, and what you would like to do differently in 2027.
Start With the Farmer, Then Build the Service
This is also one of the reasons we are developing the Wonderfull Trained Operator Network for 2027.
We don’t want to train a group of operators first and then hope there is work nearby.
We would rather do it the other way around:
Understand where farmers need service first, then prepare the operators and equipment to meet that need.
If a farming community has strong demand for drone spraying, we need to know. If another area has more interest in cover crop spreading, we need to know that too.
Agricultural work often happens within a very short window. Waiting until the crop needs treatment, the field is too wet to enter, and everyone is looking for a drone operator at the same time is not the best time to start planning.
Planning for 2027 can begin now.
We Also Want to Answer a Bigger Question: Does It Actually Pay?
There are plenty of claims about agricultural drones.
They may reduce operating costs, avoid crop damage from wheel tracks, improve access to wet fields, or help farmers make applications within a better timing window.
All of those benefits may be possible.
But for an individual farmer, the question that really matters is:
Does it actually create value on my farm?
For the 2027 season, we would like to work with a small number of participating farms and follow drone use through a full growing season.
Where practical, we want to look at actual application costs, timing, field accessibility, operating efficiency, crop response and yield.
We are not starting with the assumption that the drone will always be better.
If using a drone saves money, we want to know how much.
If its biggest value is allowing an application to happen when ground equipment cannot enter the field, we want to understand what that timing was worth.
If there is a measurable difference in crop performance or yield, we want to see it.
And if conventional equipment still makes more sense for a particular job, that is valuable information too.
At the end of the season, we want to be able to sit down with participating farmers, look at the numbers and answer one simple question:
Did using the drone actually make sense for this farm?
Because technology that earns a long-term place in agriculture shouldn’t just look impressive.
It should create real value on the farm.
What If I Want to Own My Own Drone?
Of course, hiring a service provider isn’t the only option.
If your farm has enough acreage, multiple applications throughout the year, or you simply want greater control over when the work gets done, owning an agricultural drone may make more sense.
Wonderfull can help with the equipment, training and ongoing operational support.
We also want to hear from people who already own agricultural drones and would like to improve their field knowledge, receive additional training, or potentially provide drone services to farmers in their area.
In other words, we are looking to connect two sides of the industry:
Farmers who need agricultural drone work done, and trained operators who can provide that service.
Connecting real agricultural demand with properly trained operators is the foundation of the service network we want to build for 2027.
